There is a critical gap in maternal healthcare in rural settings compared to urban areas

With 1 in 15 women dying daily due to pregnancy complications or childbirth in Uganda, the majority of these deaths occur in rural areas.

Health Center IIIs and IVs, the primary facilities serving pregnant women, often lack essential resources such as ultrasound machines, trained technicians, and adequate medical supplies, severely hindering the early detection, management and early referrals of pregnancy complications.

Midwives working in rural Uganda recount harrowing experiences: “We receive mothers in dire situations, discovering too late about underlying complications. Emergencies here are always time-critical, and every moment counts because the babies won’t wait. Any delay results in fatalities.”

The WHO recommends at least two ultrasound scans during pregnancy: one within the first 24 weeks to detect fetal abnormalities, multiple pregnancies, and complications, and another in the third trimester to monitor the pregnancy’s progress. These scans are routine in wealthier countries, providing critical information to expectant parents and healthcare professionals. Conversely, in rural Uganda, such scans are rare and often only accessible when complications arise, after arduous journeys averaging 30 kilometers.

This situation creates significant barriers to timely and effective maternal healthcare for approximately 12.8 million women living in rural Uganda. It frequently results in the late detection of complications, increasing the risk of adverse outcomes for both mothers and their unborn babies.

Ensuring every pregnant woman in rural Uganda has access to ultrasound scan service

Our mission is to revolutionize maternal healthcare by making ultrasound scan services accessible to all women irrespective of their location. By establishing and expanding ultrasound scan services in underserved communities, we aim to empower pregnant women with timely and accurate prenatal diagnostics, expedite management through early referrals. Through technology, innovation, strategic partnerships, community engagement and advocacy efforts, we strive to break down barriers to healthcare access, ensuring that every woman can receive the critical care needed for safe pregnancies and healthy births. Our commitment is rooted in promoting maternal well-being and reducing fetal mortality, ultimately contributing to stronger, healthier communities throughout Uganda.

Our approach involves leveraging the existing lower-level rural healthcare public facilities to develop a scaled program where frontline rural healthcare workers are empowered with skills to offer point of care prenatal ultrasound services ensuring equitable access for all women, transcending geographical barriers.

Rigorous academic evidence finds that our approaches can have transformative impacts on maternal healthcare outcomes including:

Reduced Maternal Mortality Rates: A compelling up to 30% decrease observed.

Faster and More Accurate Diagnoses: Studies demonstrate an average of 25% reduction in diagnosis time.

Improved Overall Healthcare Outcomes: A significant 20% enhancement in the quality of healthcare outcomes.

By effectively leveraging technology for remote consultations, our initiative strategically addresses rural healthcare challenges, contributing to a noteworthy positive shift in maternal and fetal healthcare in Uganda. Our commitment to ongoing research and evaluation ensures a refined approach, grounded in evidence-based practices, thus continually maximizing our impact on the ground.

OUR GOAL
Is to save the lives of mothers and babies by ensuring universal access to equitable, high-quality prenatal and perinatal ultrasound services for all women in Uganda, especially in rural and underserved areas, to facilitate expedited management and early referrals for pregnancy complications
