There is a critical gap in maternal healthcare in rural settings compared to urban areas

With about 15 women dying daily due to pregnancy complications or at childbirth in Uganda. Where, all most all these deaths are coming from rural Uganda.

Health Center IIIs and IVs, the primary facilities for pregnant women, often lack essential resources like ultrasound machines, trained technicians, and adequate medical supplies, severely hindering the early detection and management of pregnancy complications.

Midwives working in rural Uganda recount harrowing experiences: “Receiving mothers in dire situations where they discover too late about underlying complications.” Emergencies here are always time-critical, and every moment counts because the babies won’t wait. Any delay is a fatal result.”

The WHO recommends an ultrasound scan within the first 24 weeks of pregnancy and again in the third trimester to detect fetal abnormalities, multiple pregnancies, and complications, providing crucial information for managing pregnancy risks. In wealthier countries, these scans are routine, offering vital information to expectant parents and healthcare professionals. Conversely, in rural Uganda, such scans are incidental, often accessible typically when a complication arises and only after lengthy journeys averaging 30 kilometers.

This situation creates significant barriers to timely and effective maternal healthcare for approximately 34.8 million women living in rural Uganda. It frequently results in late-stage detection of complications, thereby increasing the risk of adverse outcomes for both mothers and their unborn babies.

Ensuring every pregnant woman in rural Uganda has access to ultrasound scan service

Our mission is to revolutionize maternal healthcare by making ultrasound scan services accessible to all women irrespective of their location. By establishing and expanding ultrasound scan services in underserved communities, we aim to empower pregnant women with timely and accurate prenatal diagnostics. Through technology, innovation, strategic partnerships, community engagement and advocacy efforts, we strive to break down barriers to healthcare access, ensuring that every woman can receive the critical care needed for safe pregnancies and healthy births. Our commitment is rooted in promoting maternal well-being and reducing fetal mortality, ultimately contributing to stronger, healthier communities throughout Uganda.

Our approach involves leveraging the existing lower-level rural healthcare public facilities to develop a scaled program where frontline rural healthcare workers are empowered with skills to offer point of care prenatal ultrasound services ensuring equitable access for all women, transcending geographical barriers.

Rigorous academic evidence finds that our approaches can have transformative impacts on maternal healthcare outcomes including:

Reduced Maternal Mortality Rates: A compelling up to 30% decrease observed.

Faster and More Accurate Diagnoses: Studies demonstrate an average of 25% reduction in diagnosis time.

Improved Overall Healthcare Outcomes: A significant 20% enhancement in the quality of healthcare outcomes.

By effectively leveraging technology for remote consultations, our initiative strategically addresses rural healthcare challenges, contributing to a noteworthy positive shift in maternal and fetal healthcare in Uganda. Our commitment to ongoing research and evaluation ensures a refined approach, grounded in evidence-based practices, thus continually maximizing our impact on the ground.

OUR GOAL
Is to improve maternal healthcare outcomes in rural Uganda by ensuring every pregnant woman has access to timely and quality ultrasound services
